                            June 2005

Greetings –

Have you ever come back from a vacation exhausted? If you’re like me you probably have. Our cultural current teaches us to hold ourselves in a state of “regulated panic”. We “gear up” for the day as soon as we get out of bed, and we inhale our coffee as we rush to be out of the house and on time for work and school. We add “just too many things” to our lives including extra meetings, sports, parties and other good stuff. Then we say, “All right, it’s summer. Let’s go on vacation!” And we do go, but we forget to leave behind that cranked-up outlook on life.

Can I get an “Amen?”

Once upon a time I had moved to the Chicago area (Downers Grove) and I was driving far too slowly in the left lane of the shopping strip between two towns just gawking at the various stores and businesses as I drove along. Eventually, I became aware of another motorist who was “riding my tail” in anticipation of my getting out of his way! We all know the intensity we can feel toward other slowpokes on the highway. Well, I moved over to the right lane and, as the man drove up along side of me, he expressed his anger at my stupidity and un-harried driving style. He did this by using a common hand gesture involving his middle finger that he shook at me with great intensity.

Luckily for him I was in a blessed mood. God was reigning in my heart and I was “practicing the peace that passeth all understanding”. From the midst of my spiritual calm I simply smiled benevolently and made the sign of the cross over him, absolving him of his sin toward the Lord and me. I suppose my black shirt and Anglican collar helped the man realize that he had just “blessed” a priest and I so enjoyed watching him speed off as he tried to “disappear” in his seat hunching his shoulders low in shame and embarrassment.

This summer as you set about the task of recreation, remember a couple of things.

o        The kingdom of God is within you.

o        Servants of God aren’t bothered by interruptions because they are what God has planned from them that day.

o        Part of carrying this Kingdom into the world is to establish God’s peace wherever we are. Attitude is everything.

o        Remember to keep the Sabbath .

Let me add that Sabbath keeping is more than church attendance and catching up on couch time. “Sabbath is the presence of something that arises when we concentrate a period of time to listen to what is most deeply beautiful, nourishing, and true. It is time consecrated with our attention, our mindfulness, honoring those quiet forces of grace and spirit that sustain and heal us.”  (Borrowed from SABBATH by Wayne Muller)

So, let me invite you to have a great summer full of blessings. But make it great by making it holy and by being one of God’s blessings to your family, church and loved ones. Join with us here at Good Shepherd to worship the Good Shepherd –. Try not to just wave as you drive by. But if you must, remember…

The Blessing of God + Father, Son, and Holy Spirit be upon you.

                                                                  Fr. Jack +

Dr. Fred Sahlmann  After 42 years in the McNeese State University Music Department, Dr. Fred Sahlmann is retiring from his duties as a professor.  Dr. Fred was honored at a piano & vocal performance followed by a reception at McNeese on May 7, 2005.  Former students he mentored performed at Ralph Squires Auditorium, a fitting tribute honoring his exemplary career.  The McNeese Foundation has established the Dr. Fred Sahlmann Scholarship in the School of Music.  You may mail your contribution to The McNeese Foundation, Richard Reid, Box 91989, Lake Charles, Louisiana, 70609.  Not to worry, Dr. Fred is still serving as organist and Chancel choirmaster, performing with Pastiche, and so much more in the our community. It was heard during the reception, “After 42 years in the department, he’s still a most sought after professor by students, and he certainly has a high bar students must reach!” He is our gift.  Congratulations Dr. Fred.
